forest fires fueled by strong winds Destroyed more than a third major town in northern Alberta on Monday and forced the oil companies in the largest oil producing province in Canada to stop the production of tens of thousands of barrels of oil.
Broke out, dozens of forest fires in various parts of the province during the dry atmosphere and a storm early this week, causing the evacuation of several communities including Slave Lake, a town where ten thousand people in northern Alberta.
Karina Pillay said Kenny mayor Slave Lake "Many of the houses and some public buildings were destroyed." She was speaking to reporters from a command center in the town, about 200 miles to the north-west of the capital of Alberta, Edmonton. The town was deserted except emergency teams.
Pillay said Kenny, "You feel strongly free and sharp smell of smoke, and the view of some areas is still emitting smoke and fire-fighting crews trying to contain any fires."
The fires have forced oil companies to stop production and in some cases, the evacuation of workers.
